Combat Basics

Honkai: Star Rail uses turn-based combat, which means that each character and enemy has to wait their turn to perform an action. When it's your turn, you typically choose between attacking an opponent or helping a teammate. There are four characters per team, and there's usually more than one opponent per battle. Every character has three abilities to choose from:

  • Base Attack. This ability generates a Skill Point.
  • Skill. This ability is typically stronger than a Base Attack, and it costs one Skill Point.
  • Ultimate. Using the previous abilities charges your characters'Energy. When their Energy meter is full, they can use their extra-powerful Ultimate ability. You can initiate this attack at any given time!

Elements and Paths

Every Honkai: Star Rail character has a certain Element and a Path type. Here's what that means:

  • Elements: Determine a character's damage type. Opponents suffer from Elemental Weaknesses which can be exploited by using the correct Element against them. There are seven Star Rail Elements in total.
  • Paths: Determine a character's combat role, ranging from DPS to healer. Like Elements, there are seven Star Rail Paths in total.

Build a Starter Team

A proper team composition is key to winning most Honkai: Star Rail battles. If you know who your enemies are, choose your team's Elements based on their Weaknesses. If not, best to go with four different Elements. Choosing the right Paths requires less prior knowledge of your opponents. In most cases, it's best to choose the following Path types:

  • One Abundance or Preservation character to protect your teammates. Abundance may be a bit easier for a new player, as healing is more reactive. Preservation typically requires a bit more strategy, such as casting a shield at the opportune moment.
  • One or more Destruction, Hunt or Erudition characters. Their goal? Dealing as much damage as possible. Erudition characters are especially handy for new players, as they target multiple enemies at once and thus end most regular battles quickly.
  • One or more Harmony or Nihility characters to boost allies' attacks or reduce your opponents' power.

At the start of the game, you get four characters for free: Trailblazer (the protagonist), March 7th, Dan Heng, and Asta. This team meets all the requirements mentioned above, so it's a great beginner's team! If you want more characters, you'll have to use the Honkai: Star Rail Warp system.

Level-Up and Ascension Materials

Make sure every character equips Light Cones and Relics (Relics are unlocked at Trailblaze Level 14). Light Cones function as Honkai: Star Rail's weapons, while Relics provide huge stat increases and powerful set effects. Use the character menu to equip new gear.

  • Trailblaze EXP: Increases your main level.
  • Character Exp Materials: Used to increase character level.
  • Light Cone Exp Materials: Used to increase Light Cone level.
  • Relic Exp Materials: Used to increase Relic level.
  • Trace and Ascension Materials: Needed for character and Light Cone Ascension.
